Downtown Wilmington's Holiday Season Runs on Saturdays This Year. Here's the Calendar, From the Parade to the Drone Shows.

  • November 5, 2026

From Oct. 3 through Dec. 26, 2026, parking in the Market Street and 2nd Street decks costs a flat $5 on Saturdays, and the first hour is still free. That is according to the City of Wilmington's Downtown Services page. The rest of the season's calendar follows the same pattern. Small Business Saturday gets free trolleys. Each December drone show lands on a Saturday night, and Santa is downtown on all three of those Saturdays. Two of the season's races share a date with a drone show. If you live a few blocks from Front Street, you don't need to wonder whether something is happening downtown this season. You need to know which Saturday it is.

The City Has Already Told You Which Day It Expects

Here is the City's list of approved permits for the season.

Date Day What's permitted downtown
Nov. 26 Thursday Turkey Trot
Nov. 27 Friday Tree Lighting
Nov. 28 Saturday Holiday Market on Dock, Small Business Saturday, District Day
Nov. 29 Sunday Holiday Parade
Dec. 5 Saturday CVB Drone Show, Santa Saturday, Historic Half Marathon
Dec. 12 Saturday CVB Drone Show, Santa Saturday, Dashing Through the Glow
Dec. 19 Saturday CVB Drone Show, Santa Saturday

Thanksgiving weekend has something every day, and Saturday has the most. After that, every permitted December event falls on one of three Saturdays. The $5 deck rate lasts one more Saturday, Dec. 26, so the cheap parking outlasts the scheduled events by a week.

Thanksgiving Weekend Is Four Days, and Saturday Carries the Most

The Downtown Business Alliance calls the stretch from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30 its Downtown Holiday Kickoff. The DBA describes it as four days meant to send people through all seven downtown districts.

The Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Turkey Trot opens the weekend on Thanksgiving morning. The City's Riverfront Park calendar lists it from 6:45 to 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 26. On Friday, Nov. 27, the Downtown Holiday Tree Lighting takes place and Battle of the Bulbs voting opens. Both the DBA and the City's permit list put the tree lighting on that Friday.

Saturday, Nov. 28 has the most going on. The DBA's District Day: Small Business Saturday Edition runs complimentary trolleys between all seven downtown districts from noon to 7 p.m. Starting an hour earlier, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Really Cool Stuff Holiday Market fills Dock Street between 2nd and Water Streets. Organizer Cool Wilmington says the market is free and features local artisans, vendors and entertainment, and calls it a Small Business Saturday celebration. With the trolleys running, you can park once, shop the market, and then ride to districts you'd normally drive to.

The weekend ends Sunday night with the City's 23rd Annual Holiday Parade on Nov. 29. The parade runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Front Street between Walnut and Church Streets, and that stretch closes at 5 p.m. The parade's Sunday slot leaves the Saturday market and trolley day free of street closures.

Three December Saturdays, and Santa at Every One

The Riverwalk drone shows have changed more than anything else since last year, and the changes favor people who live downtown.

The shows started small. In December 2024, Port City Daily reported that three downtown holiday drone shows on Dec. 14, 21 and 28 were a new part of the season. Wilmington Downtown Inc., Visit Wilmington, NC and Beaches, and the Downtown Business Alliance presented them. In 2025 the visitors bureau named the program Holidays on Water and planned four December Saturdays, with Santa photo visits on two of them. Weather got in the way. WECT reported that the first 2025 show, set for Dec. 6, was canceled, leaving Dec. 13, 20 and 27 on the schedule.

For 2026, the Holidays on Water listing has 150 drones over the river at 7 p.m. on Dec. 5, 12 and 19, from the Riverwalk on Water Street between Dock and Grace Streets. The shows are free, and the City of Wilmington is the presenter. Santa will be near the Visitor Information Booth from 5 to 8 p.m. on all three Saturdays.

  • Santa appears on three Saturdays, up from two. In 2025, WECT reported Santa visits only on Dec. 13 and 20.
  • The series ends a week before Christmas. Last year's schedule ran to Dec. 27. This year's final show is Dec. 19, so all three Saturdays come before the holiday travel week.

The drone count is 150 in 2026, the same number WECT reported for 2025. Last year WECT said the best views were along the Riverwalk across from Battleship North Carolina. The 2026 listing does not name a viewing spot, but that 2025 tip is a reasonable place to start.

Two of Those Saturdays Start With a Race

Two of the drone Saturdays begin early, with runners on the riverfront. The City's Riverfront Park calendar lists the Wilmington Historic Half, 10K & 5K on Dec. 5 and Dashing Thru the Glow 5K on Dec. 12. The City's permit list confirms both share a date with a drone show and a Santa Saturday. On Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, the riverfront has scheduled events on both ends of the day. Dec. 19 is the only drone Saturday with no race attached.

A New Table Opens at 5 p.m. on Saturdays

The restaurants opening downtown this fall line up with that Saturday schedule.

Opa by Giorgios, a coastal Greek and Mediterranean restaurant at 14 Harnett St., had its soft opening on Oct. 28, 2026, StarNews reported. Giorgios Bakatsias oversees the restaurant. The restaurant's site lists Saturday dinner from 5 to 11 p.m. and late-night bar hours until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Saturday dinner starts at 5 p.m., the same time Santa arrives at the Visitor Information Booth, and the 2 a.m. bar close runs well past the 7 p.m. show.

Other downtown changes this fall:

  • Uji, 101 N. Third St. In the former Dunkin' storefront, owner Sada Hudson is building a Japanese-inspired tea and matcha shop. WilmingtonBiz reported a target of a soft opening after Thanksgiving and a full opening in December. The plans include Japanese convenience-store-style sandwiches, onigiri, and reservation-only omakase dinners on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Coastal Candle Co., 261 N. Front St. This shop had opened by the time of StarNews's Oct. 1 roundup of new downtown businesses.
  • I Love NY Pizza, 28 N. Front St. The longtime pizzeria changed hands in October. WilmingtonBiz reported that new owners Megan Jackson and Jeremy Bailey plan to keep the business as people know it.
  • Smoke on the Water and Rumcow. On Oct. 19, WECT reported a plan for the two to begin combining operations on Oct. 29, with Smoke on the Water's menu items to be added at Rumcow gradually.

A December Drone Saturday, Hour by Hour

Using the published times, here is how one of the three December Saturdays fits together:

  1. Arrive before 5 p.m. Park in the Market Street or 2nd Street deck. The first hour is free and the Saturday rate is $5.
  2. 5 p.m. Santa visits near the Visitor Information Booth until 8 p.m., and Opa by Giorgios begins Saturday dinner service.
  3. 7 p.m. The 150-drone show starts over the river, best seen from the Riverwalk on Water Street between Dock and Grace Streets.
  4. After the show Walk Front Street and look at the storefronts entered in Battle of the Bulbs.

The Storefront Contest Runs Longest

The DBA's Battle of the Bulbs is a storefront decorating competition among downtown businesses. Community voting opens Nov. 27, official judging is Dec. 9 and 10, and the contest runs through Jan. 4, 2027. Judging comes between the second and third drone Saturdays, and People's Choice voting stays open more than two weeks after the last show. Long after Dec. 19, you can still walk Front Street on a weekday evening and vote for the window you like best.
